Martirio di
San Sebastiano

THE MARTYRDOM OF SAINT SEBASTIAN
In the first chapel on the left side of the cathedral is the canvas of the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, dated 1611 and painted by Venetian artist Jacopo Negretti, known as Palma il Giovane. Sebastian was a Roman army officer who lived in the 4th century under Emperor Diocletian. He supported imprisoned Christians and helped spread Christianity. When Diocletian discovered his faith, Sebastian was sentenced to death: he was pierced by many arrows but miraculously survived. The emperor then ordered him to be beaten to death. The composition strongly recalls Tintoretto’s work, especially in the dramatic angel descending from above to offer the palm of martyrdom and in the Mannerist contortion of the saint’s body.
